Design Your Ceiling Grid
Before you start, it’s a good idea to design the ceiling grid on paper so that it will fit perfectly in the room. It’s much easier to cut drywall to fit your grid than it is to cut a poorly designed grid out of drywall. When designing your ceiling grid, make sure that all of the pieces are symmetrical and balanced; otherwise, they will look awkward when installed.
Once you have an idea of how much space each piece should take up on your wall, measure and cut all of the pieces using either a saw or utility knife.
Install the Wall Angles
Next, attach the wall angles to the studs. You don’t have to measure, just lay them out where you want them and secure them with a nail gun or screws. Make sure that both sides of each track are level—it’s easy for one side to stick up slightly more than the other if it wasn’t positioned correctly or if the floors aren’t perfectly level. If you have access to a stud finder, use it to locate studs in the wall and mark them with a pencil before attaching your panel so that you have something solid to secure against.
If you don’t have access to a stud finder (or if you prefer not to use one), simply drive nails or screws directly into place at intervals of about every 8 inches along each panel. Then, press firmly into place as necessary until flush with the ceiling grid behind it.
Cut and Install Perimeter Molding
You’ll want to cut your perimeter molding to fit the ceiling. A table saw or a circular saw is a good tool for this, but you can also do it with a miter saw, jigsaw, or router. If you’re using metal framing with corners that have angles other than 90 degrees, use angles of your choosing instead of 90 degrees when cutting the perimeter molding.
If you’re using metal framing without corners—for example, if you’re installing drop ceilings on recessed metal tracks—cut all four pieces of perimeter molding at 45-degree angles on each end.
