Aesthetic

Drop ceilings and drywall ceilings have different aesthetics and depending on the feel of the room, you might prefer one style over the other. Drop ceilings can be more industrial because of the grid look and the type of tile used. The grid of acoustic ceiling tiles gives a repetitive look. Drywall ceilings often look like one seamless piece and do not have breaks in the ceiling. If you want a minimal ceiling that draws little attention, a drywall ceiling would be the way to go. Drop ceilings have the option of choosing what the tiles look like so if you want a ceiling that draws more attention you might want to consider a drop ceiling with detailed tiles.

Repair

Damage to a ceiling is not ideal but is sometimes inevitable. When this happens, you will need to repair it whether it is done yourself or by a local drywall contractor that specializes in drywall and/or ceilings. For drop ceilings, unless the damage is on the structure, repairs can be very easy and you could repair it yourself. If it is just one or more tiles that need to be fixed, you will remove any of the old/damaged tiles and replace them with new tiles. Drywall ceiling repairs can be a little harder and might take special tools. After fixing the hole or damage to drywall on a ceiling, the texture of the ceiling will have to be replicated so the repair is not obvious.

Accessibility

Sometimes you need to access the space above the ceiling to fix a pipe or wires, or maybe to install lighting. This space between the structural ceiling and dropped ceiling/drywall ceiling is called plenum space. How you access this space is different depending on what your ceiling is like. For a drywall ceiling, it is best to make sure you plan out where you are accessing the plenum space because you will have to cut into the ceiling. If you need another access point you will have to cut into the drywall again. Once the work done in the plenum space is finished, the cuts will have to be repaired. Accessing the plenum space with a drop ceiling is much more simple. Push out one of the tiles and you will have access to the plenum space. If you need to access another point in the ceiling, you just have to push out another tile, no cutting is necessary. When finished, you replace the tiles taken out and no further repair is needed.
