There are different types of exterior painting, and knowing where to start exterior painting is a challenge, but fret not! Here is our guide on the different types of exterior painting.

Basic Types of Exterior Painting

#1 Primer Paint

Primer is not a type of exterior paint but it is necessary for exterior painting. Primer serves two basic functions; which are, (1) primer makes the paint adhere to the surface, and (2) primer ensures that true color comes out after the job is completed.

Primer is applied before anything, and it comes in two forms:

  •         Oil-based primers
  •         Water-based primers

The choice of primer depends upon the type of paint you have chosen. If you are using water-based paint, then use a water-based primer, and vice versa.

#2 Water-based and Oil-based Paint

As the name suggests, water-based paints are made up of water, whereas oil-based paints are made up of oil. Generally, water-based paints are matte, thinner, and dry up quickly, whereas oil-based paints are shiny, thicker, and dry slowly.

Also, water-based paints can be easily removed by water and soap, whereas oil-based paints require chemicals and solvents to be removed.

Common Types of Exterior Painting

As a general rule, exterior paints are oil-based, whereas interior paints are water-based.

If you are not sure if the paint you are using is for exterior or interior painting, check the label of the paint tin to ensure that you are using the right type of paint for exterior painting. You can also ask the store clerk for advice on the type of paint you should purchase for exterior house painting.

Here are the most common types of exterior paints:

#1 Enamel Paint

Enamel paints are oil-based paints known for their durability. They can be found in different types of finishes such as semi-gloss or gloss. They are generally used around exterior windows and doors; however, there is a slight disadvantage: they tend to discolor after a few years.

#2 Acrylic Paint

Acrylic is used as a binding agent in these paints. There are various types of acrylic paints, which include:

  •         Acrylic enamel paints
  •         Acrylic latex paints
  •         Acrylic latex enamel paints

Before you purchase these paints for exterior painting, make sure to check the paint can to ensure what type of material it is made up of. That is because these paints may not necessarily contain latex or acrylic.

#3 Specialty Exterior Paints

All of these types of exterior paints have certain additives added in them to give them a certain property such as:

  •         Anti-condensation paints
  •         Anti-mold paints
  •         Anti-mildew paints
  •         Fire retardant paints
