There are many times when you may think you can DIY drywall installation but you may not realize that there is so much to drywall installation that you do not yet know. There are many common drywall installation mistakes that you do not want to make, so let’s discuss them and see how you can avoid them.

Mistake #1 Little to no edge support

The most common mistake that DIY installers make is using little to no framing on the edges. Why is framing the corners so important? Because of this, you cannot fasten the drywall appropriately. You need to leave a minimum of 1-inch framing at the corners.

Professional drywall contractors always inspect the framing before drywall installation.

Mistake #2 Inaccurate framing locations

Some people fail to mark the framing locations. They make a random guess of every framing location, which is the recipe for disaster. Try to mark the framing locations before you cover them with drywall. Use a marker to mark the locations and use them as a guide to correctly and quickly screw in the screws. Similarly, you can use a pencil to mark the locations of the studs.

Mistake #3 Not cutting tapered corners

Cutting the drywall in a tight fit never works as the drywall often chips out at the edges or crumbles at the corners. So, you may need to remove the drywall and install it all over again. So, to avoid this problem, always leave space to avoid tapered edges. As a rule of thumb, you can leave at least 1/8-inch space on every corner. You can easily fill in the gaps later on.

You can contact a skillful drywall installation contractor to get more information.

Mistake #4 Using oversized screws

Professional drywall installation companies know that the use of oversized screws is not worth it. Overly long screws damage the wires of plumbing behind the walls. Contrary to the popular belief, oversized screws do not fasten the drywall more tightly or reinforce the structural integrity of your room.

This is another good reason why you need to hire a professional for the job!

Mistake #5 Fixing after fasting

Suppose you have a socket plug and you want to put up drywall. Now, what most amateur drywall installers do is that they force the drywall over the socket plug and then try to break or trim the drywall. This way, you can end up with broken drywall, which also leads to a waste of time, money, and resources.

So, it is best to fit before you fast the drywall. Measure and cut away the opening, then hold the drywall against the socket and see if it fits. Once you are satisfied with the fit, trim away any rough edges with a sharp knife, then slowly slide the drywall into place.

Mistake #6 Too many joints

Needless joints are never logical, so try to avoid unnecessary joints. Use the longest sheet of drywall to avoid any ugly joints. As a rule of thumb, a 54-inch-wide drywall sheet is the best option for a basic room to avoid any horizontal joints.

Mistake #7 Taping gaps

Covering ugly-looking gaps with tape is not a long-term solution. Needless to say, it looks tacky. Use joint compound to fill in the gaps.

You can always hire an expert drywall installation contractor to end up with a polished look.
