Drywall is a popular material for homeowners. It offers many benefits from affordability to stability and safety features; however, it has a disadvantage: it is prone to damage. It can be damaged easily because it does not offer impact-resistant properties. So, holes, cracks, and damaged corners are common.

Fortunately, we have good news: There are tons of drywall repair methods for these problems. Most of these methods are simple and cost-effective DIYs. Here, we uncover the best way to patch a hole in your wall.

So, let’s get started.

Materials and tools

Before we move on to the actual procedure, let’s see the basic materials and tools you need to patch a hole in your wall:

  • ·         Drywall tape
  • ·         Painter’s tape
  • ·         Taping knife
  • ·         Sandpaper
  • ·         Joint compound
  • ·         Rag

All of these materials are easily available in the market at affordable rates.

How to Patch a Hole in Your Wall

To patch a hole in your wall, you need to follow these five basic steps.

Step #1 Prep work

Use painter’s tape to protect the trim material for holes near doors or windows. Cut a ¼ to 1/8-inch-deep groove to remove the loose material around the hole. Make sure to cut into the length of the hole.

Use your utility knife to cut out the damaged tape for holes where the tape is already present. Use a clean rag to remove any debris or dust surrounding the hole.

Step #2 Apply drywall tape

You can embed drywall tape with adhesive backing directly on top of the hole. Otherwise, use a taping knife to apply a thin layer of drywall mud on top of the hole. You can use a 4-inch or a 6-inch taping knife for this purpose. Now, embed drywall tape over the hole. Set the tape by squeezing the trapped air bubbles underneath the blade of your knife. Now, apply a thin layer of the same mud on top of the tape. Extend the mud a few inches past both ends of the tape.

Step #3 Apply more mud

Apply another layer of drywall mud on top of the tape with the use of a 12-inch taping knife. Again, make sure the mud extends a few inches past both sides of the tape in a way that it covers the tape completely. Allow the mud to dry.

If you can still see the tape through the mud, apply another layer of mud over the tape. Keep repeating the process until the tape is completely covered.

Step #4 Sand the wall

Use 120-grit sandpaper to sand the drywall. You can also use a sanding sponge. However, make sure to sand the wall until it is smooth. Try not to sand over the underlying tape. Now, use a wet rag to remove dust or debris over the wall.

Use gloves and goggles while sanding the wall to protect your hands and eyes.

Step #5 Pain the wall

Use paint to color the wall so that it matches the surrounding area. Make sure to use the same paint as the rest of the wall.

Cover your surroundings with a plastic sheet to avoid dripping paint.

Patching a hole in your wall is a simple, cost-effective, and quick process; however, it requires an expert pair of hands to make sure you do not mess up your room.
