Drywall is a simple material to install for homeowners. The secret to achieving a perfect finish with drywall is the way of its application.

Why Drywall Finish?

Drywall is very popular because it has many health and safety features such as:

  •         Drywall can be easily painted over
  •         Drywall does not require sanding
  •         Drywall is highly resistant to fire
  •         It provides the sound as well as temperature insulation
  •         You can create unique decorations and frames from drywall

Perfect finish by drywall

Before you begin, it is important to know the tools and materials you need to achieve a perfect drywall finish.

Tools required

  •         Taping knives (6- 12 inches)
  •         Compound tray for tapping
  •         Screw gun
  •         Dusty mask
  •         Eye protectors
  •         Sanding block

Material for drywall

  1.     Drywall tape is available in two types: paper tape and fiberglass mesh.
  •         Paper/fiberglass tape is used for straight seams
  •         Paper tape is used to cover inside corners
  1.     Taping compound is the mud used for seams and corners for the purpose of filling major gaps, as well as for applying a second coat.
  2.     Topping compound is used for the third smooth finish layer of mud, a skim coat over the seams, as well as fastener holes.
  3.     Lightweight compound is a unique mud used to enhance drying.

Surface preparation

Remove all the nails, screws, and obstacles. In case there are any spots on the drywall, remove them with a sharp razor before you start tapping.

Apply paper tape coat

First, cut a length of paper tape as the exact length of the joint. Now, scoop some mud into a compound tray. Apply a smooth and thin layer of mud over the joint. Quickly press the paper tape into the mud. Tape in place and apply light pressure using a knife to remove extra mud.

Apply fiberglass tape:

Cut a length of tape and press it over the joint to remove any bumps or ripples. Apply a thick layer of compound to fill and cover the mesh surface. Fiberglass-mesh tape is self-adhesive.

Finish inside corners:

Follow the same method to finish the inside corners where walls meet. Use special knives. Fill long angled strips. Then, let it dry overnight.

Apply the finish coat

It is important to note that if you have carefully applied and sanded the first coat, the finish coat will require only a very light final application of mud to create a smooth surface. Use a 12 inches wide knife for this purpose. Apply a very light finish coat which takes about one to two hours to dry.

Conclusion

If you have performed all the above-mentioned steps, then you are sure to achieve a smooth finish with drywall. However, it is important to avoid the temptation to over-sand. Lastly, if the finish does not satisfy your need, then you can apply another thin layer of mud. At Home Drywall & Painting, we are here to help you achieve a smooth finish with drywall.
