Drywall is a popular material for the construction of houses because of its many benefits. Also known as plasterboard, wallboard, or sheetrock, drywall reinforces the structural integrity of your house and improves its fire resistance properties as well.

However, cracks and holes in drywall are common, so it requires regular maintenance to continue offering the many advantages.

Home Drywall & Painting gives you the best tips and techniques to fix cracks and holes in drywall. So, let’s get started.

Fix Drywall Cracks

It is important to know that drywall cracks are often caused by the settling of your house instead of foundational problems. However, the key is to observe if the cracks get bigger over time. If they do, you need to wait for them to stop getting bigger before you start the repair process.

For this procedure, you need the following materials or tools:

  • Pre-mixed joint compound
  • Painter’s tape
  • Utility knife
  • Putty knife
  • Sanding sponge

Once you have all the materials and tools, you can start the repair process. Here are the steps you need to follow:

  1.       Cut approximately ½ to ¼ of an inch through the crack. Make sure to cut deeper across the length of the crack. Remove loose materials from the wall.
  2.       Use a knife to apply a 1/2 an inch layer of the pre-mixed joint compound on the crack. Then, apply the tape to the layer of compound.
  3.       Use another knife to squeeze the excess compound from beneath the tape. Remove the extra compound and let the mud dry. Now, apply a second layer of the same compound over the tape. Again, squeeze the excess compound.
  4.       You can repeat the process as many times as you want to. As a rule of thumb, three layers of the compound are enough; however, make sure to let the layers dry before applying a second or a third coat.
  5.       Use the sanding sponge to sand the drywall. Now, apply a layer of matching paint to ensure that the wall looks smooth.

Fix Drywall Holes

To fix holes in the drywall, you need the following materials or tools:

  • Pre-mixed joint compound
  • Painter’s tape
  • Utility knife
  • Putty knife
  • Sanding sponge

Now you can start the process as follows:

For smaller holes, cut the hole at an angle so that the exterior is bigger as compared to the interior. Use the pre-mixed joint compound to fill the gap. Let the compound dry. Now, apply another layer of the compound. Keep on adding more layers until the gap is completely filled. Once the layers are dry, use a sanding sponge to smoothen the surface and apply a layer of paint.

For bigger holes, sand the area. Now, place a fiberglass mesh tape over the hole. Apply the pre-mixed joint compound over the mesh tape. Add a few more layers of the compound. Sand the area and apply a layer of paint.

Fixing bigger cracks and holes in the drywall requires experience and skills. So, it is best to hire a professional drywall repair service. You can count on Home Drywall & Painting for drywall repairs.
