When choosing a new ceiling for your home, you might get caught up between textured and smooth (contemporary) surfaces. After all, you want the look of your new ceiling to be both functional and complimentary of your house’s style. Between 1930 and 1990, popcorn ceiling surfaces were the common choice as they could cover imperfections and dampen noise. However, their popularity died down due to their asbestos content, and smooth ceiling surfaces started to dominate the market, helped by their sleek appearance. However, popcorn surfaces are back, this time being made from styrofoam and/or stucco, and safer. So, what should you pick for your home? Read on to compare the pros and cons of each! Aesthetics
Popcorn surfaces have antiquated looks. They are irregular and bumpy, but these bumps are exactly what makes them ideal for hiding the imperfections of the base ceiling because they can cover cracks, leak damage, defects, and even poor drywall work. Even if a popcorn surface is a good alternative to replace drywall, many homeowners prefer other ceiling textures such as smooth ceilings. This is because a smooth ceiling is way more elegant solution and one which blends seamlessly into the walls. Because of the way they are painted, more natural light is reflected in comparison to popcorn surface. Another point is the depth of smooth surfaces. Because they are painted with thin layers of paint, they occupy less room and this makes the room look larger and more airy. In contrast, because popcorn surfaces have 3D bumps, you will need to keep your head that bit lower.
Maintenance
Maintaining a ceiling with popcorn surface texture can be difficult because of the rough texture itself. Cobwebs, dirt, and dust can attach gather in the bumps making it hard to keep the surface clean. Running a feather duster over the ceiling can help; however, if the ceiling is rubbed too hard, the texture may come loose or crack and fall off. Also, popcorn surfaces do not go well with moisture. If a part of the surface comes in contact with water, it will loosen and eventually come down. Thus they shouldn’t be used in areas such as bathrooms and kitchens. Smooth surfaces on the other hand are not troubled with these issues. Because they are, well, smooth, they make it easy to repaint any part of them. They are also easier to clean. Also, they do not face problems when in contact with water and can be safely used in areas such as bathrooms and kitchens.
Repairs
Popcorn surfaces are more difficult to repair. If any part flakes off, you will probably need to repaint the entire area if you want the patch to blend in properly with the rest of the ceiling. A smooth surface is easier to repair because a damaged piece can be cut out and replaced by matching piece of drywall. Then drywall screws can be conveniently used to attach that piece.
