Living With Popcorn Ceilings Part 2
Hello there! We are so excited to welcome you to Part 2 of our blog series “Living With Popcorn Ceilings”. In this series, your local sheetrock contractors Woodbury MN at Home Drywall & Painting discuss the A-Z about living in a Minnesota or Wisconsin house that is equipped with popcorn ceilings. So lets’s resume!Popcorn Ceiling Removal Stillwater Minnesota
Can You Hide Them?
Why would you want to hide your popcorn ceilings? Well, they are a nuisance when it comes to maintenance and they do decrease your house’s value (more on these below). That is why there are so many ways of hiding them such us using rigid foam ceiling tiles, drywall panels, or even wood planking right over the existing texture. If you are willing to stretch your budget a bit, feather-light decorative foam ceiling panels can also be an option for you. These can be installed with adhesive and look clean (drywall and wood must be attached to the ceiling joists with nails or screws). For ceilings of rooms that are more than 8 feet in height, you might want to consider installing a drop/false ceiling. Troublesome Maintenance
Because of their very popcorn-like surface, these ceilings require a lot of work to maintain them. Huge amount of work is required to keep the surface area clean and fix any undesired features such as holes or cracks that may appear over time. Cobwebs, spiders, dust, and bits of dirt can easily accumulate in between the bumps. Moreover, smoke can eventually stain your ceiling, and this can be difficult to remove. You can try to dispose of the dirt by using a duster or the brush head of a vacuum cleaner, but there is a catch. If you press too hard, raised particles of your ceiling may break and fall off, causing a lot more hassle. And then there is humidity. It is a bad idea to have popcorn ceilings in kitchens, bathrooms, or any place that contain moisture. Water damage will result in the textured appearance to come loose and peel off over time. Leaks will only harm your ceiling, as the stipple will become heavy, and eventually start to fall.
Do They Decrease Your Home’s Value?
Popcorn ceilings are things of the past. In light of all these difficulties, home owners no longer prefer them and an increasing number of buyers do not want them in their purchases. Thus removing such ceilings would translate to less maintenance expenditure for the new owner, and, therefore, you can negotiate a better price. For example, it is estimated that removing a popcorn ceiling would add $25,000 to $35,000 in value for a large estate executive home. For a home of about 1,400 square feet costing about $200,000, $2500 is the estimated increase in value. The larger and more lavish the house, the more it needs a popcorn ceiling removal.
